By Ralph Nader

In 1965, Ralph Nader's groundbreaking book Unsafe at Any Speed exposed the automotive industry's disregard for safety. The book's revelations led to the creation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a host of new safety regulations. Today, Unsafe at Any Speed remains a must-read for anyone interested in car safety, automotive history, or the American consumer movement.

Nader's book was a product of his own experiences with unsafe cars. In 1960, he was driving a Chevrolet Corvair when the car's rear suspension failed, causing the car to roll over. Nader was seriously injured in the accident, and he spent the next several years investigating the Corvair's safety record. He discovered that the Corvair was prone to rollovers, and that General Motors had known about the problem for years but had failed to take action.

Nader's book exposed the automotive industry's widespread use of planned obsolescence and marketing ploys that put profits ahead of safety. He argued that the industry had created a "vast catalogue of automotive horrors" that included defective brakes, faulty steering systems, and flammable interiors.

Unsafe at Any Speed was a bombshell. It sparked a public outcry and led to a series of congressional hearings. In 1966, Congress passed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which created the NHTSA. The NHTSA has since issued hundreds of safety regulations that have saved countless lives.

Unsafe at Any Speed is a classic work of investigative journalism. It is a searing indictment of the automotive industry, and it is a must-read for anyone who cares about car safety.
